All data cables meet in one place: a cabinet in or beside the meter cupboard with the switch, modem and power for the access points. Without a patch panel the cables end loose behind a cupboard, and then you have a mess instead of a network.
Assuming accessible cable routes. Chasing in solid masonry or a run across several floors adds chasing and making-good.
We do not sell cables because Wi-Fi is bad. Wi-Fi is fine — provided the access points hang in the right place, and they only hang there if a cable runs to them.

Four wired points — at the desk, behind the TV, at the meter cupboard and where an access point will sit — plus one access point per floor and a patch panel. That is about € 1,240 and it solves almost every Wi-Fi problem people try to fix with ever more expensive mesh kits.
In a classic circuit only a live and a switch wire run to the wall switch. The neutral goes straight to the lamp. That works fine for an ordinary switch — but a smart switch needs permanent power to listen to your app, and that power needs a neutral.
If in three years you want smart switches and there is no neutral, there are three options. Battery switches you replace every two years. Modules that sit behind the luminaire in the ceiling. Or pulling a neutral afterwards at € 150 to € 250 per switch point. During a renovation that extra core costs almost nothing.
If the neutral is there, replacing an ordinary switch with a smart one is a ten-minute job per point.

If you are sure you never want anything smart, and you are not renovating anyway, it is an academic discussion. But if a chase is open and the question is whether one extra wire may go in: the answer is always yes.
“Do you run a neutral to every switch point?” With us that is standard in a full installation. If you get a quotation elsewhere that does not include it, ask what it costs to add — and then compare.
Home automation is not an end in itself. The question is what you actually want to do: dim lights from the sofa, blinds that follow the sun, or a system that is still maintainable in fifteen years.
Replace ordinary switches with smart ones, on Zigbee or Wi-Fi. Works with almost any platform, you can expand them yourself, and if the system ever stops the switch remains just a switch. Does require a neutral at each point.
A hub with sensors, switches and motors that form a network among themselves. Flexible, affordable, and you can expand step by step. Drawback: you depend on the manufacturer and on software that may disappear in ten years.
A wired bus along all points, with an open standard supported by dozens of manufacturers. Expensive to install, but brand-independent and still maintainable in twenty years. Worth it on a shell renovation of a larger house.
For most homes up to 150 square metres KNX is overkill. A solid base — neutral at every switch point, wired data points, PoE access points and a patch panel — plus smart switches where you want them, gives ninety percent of the comfort for a fraction of the price.
If you are renovating to shell stage, the house is larger than two hundred square metres, and you want blinds, heating and lighting truly integrated, then KNX is worth the investment.

For almost every home CAT6 is more than enough: it does 1 gigabit over runs up to 90 metres, more than your broadband and more than your devices can use.
CAT6a makes sense if you want 10 gigabit indoors between, for example, a workstation and a NAS, or if the cable runs beside many power cables and you want shielding. For most households the money is better spent on an extra point or a second access point.
PoE means Power over Ethernet: the access point gets data and power on the same network cable, so you need no nearby socket. It is a flat disc on the ceiling that barely shows.
The difference with off-the-shelf mesh is that a mesh satellite also links to the router over Wi-Fi, so speed roughly halves per hop. A wired access point has full speed to the point. In a pre-war building with thick walls that is the difference between working and not working.

Often partly. In a home with a suspended ceiling, crawl space or attic we can run most cables out of sight without chasing. From top to bottom it usually goes via an existing service shaft or along the meter cupboard.
Where there is truly no alternative we use a neat cable trunking or skirting. That is € 26 per metre versus € 17 to € 24 per metre chasing plus € 14 making good — cheaper, faster and less dust, and visually fine in many homes.
