A 16-amp circuit delivers about 3.6 kilowatts at 230 volts. An oven draws 3.5, a dishwasher 2.2 and a kettle 2.2. Two of those three at once and you are over the limit. That is the whole story, and the fix is just as simple: put them on separate circuits.

Single-phase induction runs via a perilex connection and is limited to about 3.7 kW. With a wok zone or teppanyaki it becomes 7.4 kW and needs three phases — then two circuits go to it.
A built-in oven draws up to 3.5 kW and runs for a long time. If it shares a circuit with the worktop, it is only a matter of time before you are in the dark at Christmas. A steam oven or second oven gets its own circuit.
Not only because of the power, but because of pump leakage current. A dishwasher near end of life trips a shared RCD — and half your home goes with it.
A boiling-water tap has a reservoir that stays hot and needs its own connection under the sink. Ask your kitchen supplier where the tap sits before we pull the cable.
With induction with a wok zone unavoidable. Our installation work is € 695; the grid operator charges roughly € 369 once for 3×25 A — and your annual standing charge stays the same.
A kitchen supplier delivers and fits the kitchen and connects appliances to what is there. What they do not do is add new circuits, pull cables or alter the meter cupboard — they often may not. If your kitchen quotation says “connect to existing supply”, that is exactly what happens: your new induction hob hangs on the 1985 circuit.
Moving a socket afterwards costs € 135 plus tiling plus a repair you will always see. Planning it properly beforehand costs half an hour at the kitchen table. This is what we discuss then.
Typical is about 110 to 120 cm from the floor, or 15 to 20 cm above a 92 cm worktop. Low enough to disappear behind a toaster, high enough to reach with a pan on the surface. If there is a glass or stone splashback, that sets the final height — so we align with your kitchen supplier before we drill.
Our rule of thumb: one double socket per metre of continuous worktop, with at least two where the coffee machine will sit. Sounds excessive until you count what stays plugged in permanently — kettle, coffee machine, toaster — and what gets added temporarily: stick blender, food processor, phone charger.
This is where a worktop socket block comes in: a pop-up or rotating unit flush in the surface. Costs € 245 and needs a cut-out from the worktop supplier — so that must be on your kitchen drawing, not in our head. Alternative is a socket in the side of the island, cheaper but less convenient.
Dishwasher, oven and fridge get their socket in the adjacent cupboard, not behind them — then you can unplug without pulling the appliance out. The extractor gets its point in the wall unit. And under the sink goes the boiling-water tap connection, with enough space beside the reservoir.
Do not forget the dining table if it is in the kitchen, and think of a point where you put the phone. A data outlet for a TV or speaker costs € 165 and is impossible afterwards without chasing again.
If you already have a design from your kitchen supplier, email it along. We mark the electrical points on it and send it back — then you see before the order what is coming and what it costs, and your kitchen supplier can plan the right cut-outs straight away.
With kitchens it almost never goes wrong in the technology but in the planning. The kitchen is in, and then it turns out the hob needs a connection that is not there. This is how you prevent that.
Even before you sign with the kitchen supplier: send us the drawing and appliance list. We then say whether your meter cupboard can handle it and whether an upgrade is needed — that is a weeks-long process at the grid operator.
When the old kitchen is gone and the walls are bare, this is the cheapest moment for everything we do. All old wiring and junction boxes out.
Chase grooves, new cables in conduit, fit junction boxes and pull the new circuits to the meter cupboard. This is when positions become final — moving afterwards costs tiling.
Adding circuits or a new unit, setting RCD protection, and a measurement while the walls are still open. A fault found now costs an hour; after tiling it costs a day.
We hand over plaster-ready. If we also do plastering and tiling, we schedule it back-to-back — and plastering falls under 9% VAT.
Cabinets, worktop and appliances. They connect to what we prepared. Make sure they know where our points are — we supply a drawing for that.
Fit sockets and switches in the brand you chose, connect and commission lighting, make the final cooker connection, test everything and hand over with a test certificate.
If at phase 1 it turns out you need to upgrade to three phases — for example because you chose induction with a wok zone — that takes four to ten weeks at the grid operator. If you only discover that after the kitchen is ordered, your new hob sits idle in the box for weeks. One email with the appliance list prevents that.
The kitchen is the only room where you work with knives and need to judge food colour. That needs different light from the living room, and it is not a matter of taste.
The most important light source in a kitchen, and the most often skipped. Without it you cut with your own shadow on the worktop. LED strip or separate fittings, dimmable, with the switch at the kitchen entrance.
Pendants or a row of recessed spots, on their own switch so you can run only that part. Allow three spots per two metres of island, or two to three pendants. The position must be on the kitchen drawing — moving a pendant is a hole in the ceiling.
For when you only walk through the kitchen. Often the same spots as in the adjoining living room, at 2,700 K so the transition is not jarring. On a dimmer so it can be calm in the evening.
Warm 2,700 K light is pleasant in a living room but dulls colours — meat and vegetables look different from how they are, and you see less sharply where you cut. Above a worktop we therefore advise 3,000 K with good colour rendering (CRI 90 or higher). The difference is subtle viewed alone and obvious side by side.

Three to four dedicated circuits. One for general worktop sockets, one for the hob, one for the oven and one for the dishwasher. Add a second oven, boiling-water tap or washing machine and it becomes five or six.
The reason is simple: a 16 amp circuit delivers about 3.6 kilowatts. An oven draws 3.5, a dishwasher 2.2 and a kettle 2.2 — two of those at once on one circuit and the breaker trips. Use the circuit check at the top of this page to see what your kitchen needs.

With an island and lots of appliances it becomes € 1,900 to € 2,400. Choose induction with a wok zone and need three phases for that, and you reach € 2,400 to € 3,200 including the upgrade — the grid operator’s one-off fee of about € 369 is still separate.
For a standard induction hob no: it can run on single phase via a perilex connection, limiting itself to about 3.7 kilowatts. In practice you only notice that if you cook on four zones at full power at once.
For a hob with a wok zone or teppanyaki, yes. That draws up to 7.4 kilowatts, more than a 1×25 A supply can deliver at all. Our installation work for the upgrade is € 695 and the grid operator charges roughly € 369 once for 3×25 A. Important: your annual standing charge does not rise, because 1×25 A and 3×25 A sit in the same tariff band.
Two moments. The first is before you order the kitchen: send us the drawing and appliance list, then we say whether your meter cupboard can handle it and whether an upgrade is needed. That last step takes four to ten weeks at the grid operator, and you do not want to discover that after the kitchen has already been delivered.
The second moment is after the old kitchen is out and the walls are bare, and before the tiler arrives. Then we run cables, fit the circuits and test while everything is still open. Then we return once more for finishing after the kitchen is installed.
