Before you call: three things you can check yourself.
Electrical fault finding in Amsterdam from € 135 for the first hour including the call-out. Pick your symptom below for the likely cause, what you can safely check yourself, and how urgent it is.
Fault finder: pick what is happening and we tell you the likely cause and what to check.
Pick the symptom closest to your situation. We give the most likely cause, a step-by-step you can safely do yourself, and whether it can wait.
Eén regel die altijd geldt
Never open anything that is live, and never remove a consumer-unit cover. Everything we suggest next you can do with the switches on the front and the plugs in the socket — you need go no further, and you must not go further.
The three-step routine that solves half the faults before we arrive.
This is not a trick to keep you from a visit — we earn from those visits. But a technician who spends an hour looking for a broken toaster is an awkward conversation for everyone, and you can rule that out yourself in ten minutes.
Step 1 — unplug everything
Unplug every device on the circuit that trips. Do not forget what you cannot see: the washing machine behind the door, the freezer in the store, the lamp under the bed, the garden lights. Then switch the circuit or RCD back on.
If it stays on, the problem is in an appliance. If it trips again immediately with everything unplugged, it is in the installation — then we are needed.
Step 2 — plug back in one by one
Plug devices back in one by one, a minute or two apart. The fault returns when you connect the defective appliance. Usually that is a washing machine, dishwasher, boiler, kettle or outdoor light — appliances with a heating element or a motor that has seen moisture.
Note: some appliances only cause a fault during a certain programme. A dishwasher that only trips when heating does so half an hour after you switch it on.
Stap 3 — kijk naar de weersvoorspelling
Sounds odd, but it is one of the most common patterns: an RCD that trips in rain almost always points to moisture in an outdoor light, a garden socket, a carport or a shed roof. Test by switching off the circuit that feeds the outdoor installation and seeing whether the problem disappears.
What you must not do
Wedging or bridging the RCD. Replacing a breaker with a heavier one. Removing a consumer-unit cover yourself. And repeatedly resetting a circuit that keeps tripping without finding the cause — that is exactly the scenario where a loose clamp gets time to heat up.
Does the step-by-step not work?
Then it is in the installation: a damaged cable, a loosened clamp, moisture in a junction box or an RCD at end of life. That is exactly what we come for — with an installation tester and, where needed, a cable locator.
First hour €135 including call-out within Amsterdam, each further hour €78.
Four causes, and how we tell them apart with a tester.
Faults feel random but rarely are. Almost everything falls into one of these four categories, and they are easy to tell apart with measurements.
| Cause | What you notice | How we find it | Repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defect apparaat | RCD trips, returns with one appliance | Isolate circuit by circuit, then appliance by appliance | Apparaat vervangen of laten repareren |
| Overload | Automaat gaat eruit als er veel tegelijk aanstaat | Belasting per circuit meten onder gebruik | Add a circuit — € 265 |
| Short circuit or damaged cable | Breaker trips again immediately when switched on | Insulation test per circuit, then cable tracer | Repair cable — from €195 |
| Vocht in de installatie | RCD trips in rain or after showering | Insulation test; check outdoor points and junction boxes | Replace a point or junction box — from €145 |
| Loose or overheated terminal | Burning smell, discolouration, flickering light | Visual inspection and thermal imaging under load | Repair — from €135 |
| Worn RCD | Trips without an obvious reason, or the test fails | Measure trip time in milliseconds | Replace — €215 |
When a fault is really a replacement problem
If we visit the same installation three times in a year, we are not repairing but postponing. In an installation with cloth wiring, one RCD for the whole home or too few circuits, every fault is a symptom of the same thing. We say so then: three visits at € 135 is € 405, and for € 745 you have a new consumer unit that fixes the underlying problem.

Frequently asked questions.
What does clearing a fault cost?
€ 135 including 21% VAT for the first hour, including call-out within Amsterdam. A follow-up hour costs € 78. If the cause turns out to be a faulty appliance, you only pay that first hour and know in black and white what is going on.
If it is a short circuit that must be traced, we charge € 195 for locating it; with a cable locator to find a break in a run € 245. Outside Amsterdam call-out of € 65 to € 95 is added, and work outside office hours has a 50 to 100 percent surcharge.
My RCD keeps tripping — what can I do myself?
Unplug everything on that circuit — including what you do not see: the washing machine behind the door, the freezer in the store, the garden lights. Switch the RCD back on. If it stays on, the fault is in an appliance.
Then plug devices back in one by one, a few minutes apart. The fault returns when you connect the defective appliance. Note: some appliances only fail during a certain programme, for example a dishwasher that only starts heating half an hour in. If the RCD trips again immediately with everything unplugged, it is in the installation and we are needed.
The RCD only trips when it rains. How is that possible?
That is one of the most common patterns and almost always points to moisture in the outdoor installation: a façade light holding water, a garden socket, a junction box in a carport or under a shed roof, or an extension lead outdoors.
Test it by switching off the circuit that feeds the outdoor installation and seeing whether the problem disappears. We usually fix it by replacing the point with a fitting of the right IP rating — from € 145 per point.
When should I not wait?
With a burning smell, a scorch mark, brown discoloration around an outlet, or a tingle when you touch an appliance or a tap. In those cases switch off the relevant circuit and call the same day.
A tingle means voltage is present on something that should not be live, and there is no sound earthing to clear it. A scorch mark means a joint is running hot. Both are situations where continuing to use it is a real risk.
What must I not do myself?
Wedging or bridging the RCD, replacing a breaker with a heavier one, or removing the cover of the consumer unit. And: repeatedly resetting a circuit that keeps tripping without finding the cause.
That last one sounds harmless but is exactly the scenario where a loose clamp gets time to heat up. Everything we suggest on this page you can do with the switches on the front of the unit and the plugs in the socket — you need go no further.
Do you offer a 24-hour service?
No, and we would rather say so honestly than have you call in vain. We work Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 18:00. Within those hours we try to fix a fault the same day; outside those hours call us the next morning.
If there is acute danger outside our hours — burning smell, smoke, sparks — switch off the main switch and call 112 for smoke or fire. For faults on the supply itself, before your meter, call the grid operator’s fault line; that is available 24 hours.
Hoe weet ik of het aan mijn installatie ligt of aan het net?
Check whether your neighbours are also without power, and whether the main switch in your meter cupboard is still on. If only your home is without power and your main switch is off, the problem is with you — then we are needed.
If the whole street is without power, or your main switch is still on while nothing works, it is a grid fault. Report that to your grid operator’s fault line; we cannot help and it costs you nothing.
Do you carry out fault finding for English-speaking clients?
Yes. Fault finding costs € 135 for the first hour including the call-out within Amsterdam, and € 78 per hour after that. If the cause turns out to be a faulty appliance, you pay only that first hour and get a written note of what we found.
Before calling, try this: unplug everything on the affected circuit — including the things you cannot see — and switch it back on. If it holds, plug items back one at a time. Half of all faults are a single defective appliance. Do not bridge or tape down an RCD, and do not repeatedly reset a circuit without finding the cause.
Request a callback — pick a time that suits you and we call within that window.
Briefly describe what happens and when — we often already know on the phone where to start, and that saves you an hour.
